Too cool for school – frigid temps close Fauquier County schools

coldOn January 5, Fauquier County Schools will be closed due to weather related safety concerns for students and staff. The move by county officials followed a two-hour delay for schools on January 4.

A notice was sent to parents of school children on January 3 originally to notify parents that schools would open two hours late on January 4 and 5, but an updated message was sent to parents on January 4 via the county’s emergency notification system to alert subscribers that schools would not open

The initial noticed stated, “The purpose for the delays is related to both student safety concerns due to frigidly cold temperatures, and mechanical issues impacting both transportation and the heating of schools. The additional two hours will better enable the school division to address issues that may arise and, as a result, lessen the impact to students and staff.”

The complete closure of schools January 5 was deemed necessary by county officials after subzero wind chill temperatures were predicted to continue through the day.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration issued a wind chill advisory  from 10 p.m. , Thursday, January 4 through noon Friday, January 5, with gusty winds expected to drop wind chills to as much as 10 below zero.

“The cold wind chills will cause frostbite in as little as 30 minutes to exposed skin,” the weather service said.

A decision on Saturday activities will be issued by noon tomorrow.

Additionally, neighboring schools in Prince William County schools were closed January 4, but as of yet officials have not made any announcements about Friday.

A coastal storm that hit the area overnight on January 3 left about an inch of snow on the ground in eastern Prince William and southern Fauquier.
